About
What is Hatching Hope?
Launched in 2018, Hatching Hope is a global initiative co-created by Cargill and Heifer International, and implemented in partnership with TechnoServe. Hatching Hope works with farmers, market actors and consumers throughout the world. We partner with non-governmental agencies, governments and industry groups around the globe to improve nutrition and economic livelihoods by reaching 100 million people by 2030 through the production, promotion and consumption of poultry.
What is a Hatching Hope project?
We are looking for additional partners that can help us achieve impact, sustainability and scale. There’s not just one kind of Hatching Hope project. We are building a portfolio of projects around the world to work across multiple parts of the poultry market system.
Projects can support Hatching Hope’s ambitious goals by working with:
-
Small- and mid-sized farmers to improve poultry production
-
Market actors to meet the needs of farmers and consumers in a sustainable way
-
Consumers to drive demand for nutritious poultry products where aligned with cultural and dietary standards
Why chickens?
There are several essential reasons why chickens are at the center of Hatching Hope.
Raising chickens can be relatively easy to establish
Chickens produce nutritious eggs every day
Chicken and eggs are good sources of low-cost,
high-quality proteinChickens are easy to feed, breed and bring to market
Chickens grow quickly
Chicken farming provides women an opportunity to contribute to and influence household income
And finally, chickens are at the center of a market system that can create opportunity for a broad variety of actors. Feed input crop farmers; producer organizations; millers and processors; retailers and institutional buyers; and enterprises of all sizes providing inputs, services and equipment all have a role to play in creating a robust, sustainable poultry sector.
Our program’s reach
When Hatching Hope launched, co-founders Cargill and Heifer International prioritized India, Kenya and Mexico, creating flagship programs in each country. Today, working with partners like TechnoServe, CARE, One Acre Fund and others, we have expanded our geographic footprint to create positive impact around the world.
