Many pathways to unlock the power of poultry

We are working with a variety of partners to achieve our impact goal of reaching 100 million people by 2030 through the power of poultry. Here are some examples of the projects that are driving progress for Hatching Hope with farmers, poultry value chain actors, communities and consumers.

Feathers of Fortune

Implemented by: Syngenta Foundation India (SFI)
Geography: India
Joined Hatching Hope: 2024

SFI empowers and trains rural youth to become agri-entrepreneurs who in turn deliver services that increase farmer access to credit, markets and high-quality inputs. Through Hatching Hope, SFI is implementing a project to enhance the productivity, profitability and sustainability of poultry farming in Madhya Pradesh. SFI is creating a digitally enabled network of 400 agri-entrepreneurs to train 80,000 smallholder farmers. These entrepreneurs will also deliver end-to-end services to farmers who adopt commercial production approaches in order to improve access to credit, markets, high-quality inputs and poultry housing.

Scaling Poultry for Smallholder Impact

Implemented by: One Acre Fund
Geography: Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi
Joined Hatching Hope: 2023

One Acre Fund is a social enterprise that supports Africa’s smallholder farmers to increase their productivity, incomes and resilience. In project markets, farmers often lack access to high-quality, affordable chicken breeds, while poultry suppliers tend to be centralized in urban areas. One Acre Fund is leveraging their network of field agents and retail outlets to deliver tailored solutions in each market to reach a total of 20,000 farmer households. In Kenya and Rwanda, they will support 500 chicken-rearing entrepreneurs to access high-quality chicks and raise them to sale age. In Burundi, they are facilitating farmer access to improved breeds on credit and delivering hands-on training on chicken care. Community nutrition campaigns in Burundi and Rwanda are promoting consumption of poultry, particularly for women and children under 5.

Hatching Hope

Implemented by: Heifer International (Co-founder)
Geography: India
Joined Hatching Hope: 2018

Heifer International is on a mission to end hunger and poverty while caring for the earth by supporting and investing alongside local farmers and their communities. Since Hatching Hope launched in 2018, Heifer has been strengthening backyard poultry value chain actors and supporting the creation of entrepreneurs and small-scale businesses to fill gaps in the value chain. In the current phase, Heifer’s work is supporting approximately 40,000 households in Odisha and 10,000 households in Andhra Pradesh. The Heifer team is training farmers in critical areas of poultry management and biosecurity, strengthening the capacity of farmer producer organizations, and leveraging a network of community agro-veterinary entrepreneurs (CAVES) to deliver services to farmers. In 2024, Heifer partnered with Gaon Connection, India’s largest rural communications and insights platform, to launch a nationwide campaign promoting the benefits of poultry production and consumption. To date, the campaign has reached more than 5 million people.
